How do you edit the navigation bar in a Movable Type Forum? Thanks.

  • Hi Michael,

    Assuming that you're using the "community forum" movable type theme (template set), if you look inside any template, say the "main index" template you'll notice that it includes the "Header" template module from the System Level.

    That "Header" template, among other items, includes a template module called "Navigation".

    This "Navigation" template module from the System Overview contains the navigation menu used on the "Community Forum" template set.

    The easiest method is to go to your "Community Forum" blog and to create a copy of the template module "Navigation" there.

    Give it the same name, make sure that it is a template module (not an index or archive one) and then apply your customization to it.

    Upon republishing you will see your changes!

    Alternatively, instead of creating that template module at your blog level, you could apply conditional coding to the "Navigation" template module from the System Level.

    That would look like this:

    <mt:If tag="BlogID" eq="123">
    ... your custom navigation for that blog id here..
    <mt:Else>
    ... the initial coding from the "Navigation" template module here...
    </mt:If>

    Note:
    In the coding above I assumed that your blog id is "123". If you use the alternative method, make sure that you provide there the right blog id value for your "Community Forum".

    Hope it helps!

    Kind Regards,
    Mihai Bocsaru
