Assets went lost when cloning a blog

Vote 0 Votes
Hey there, I just had this problem with assets and cloned blogs: the cloned entries were fully functional and all images (in entryBody) were cloned and available, but the asset field was empty and when I tried to generate lists with mt:EntryAssets type='image' there were no images available ... Any idea how I can clone a blog AND keep all entries' assets? Best, -f

  • Hi Funtoosh,

    When cloning a blog the assets are not cloned. It must be like that "by design" :)

    The solution that works for you is this:

    1) go to the blog that you want to clone;

    2) then go to: Tools -> Backup;

    3) let it set to "Don't compress" and click on "Make Backup";

    4) download all those files to your computer (if they are many, you may like to actually compress it as the previous step);

    5) go to the system level;

    6) then to: Tools -> Restore;

    7) choose the ".xml" file which starts with "Movable_Type-YYYY-MM-DD-HH-MM-SS-Backup" and follow the screens;

    8) when done, don't forget to copy the images that you've backed up to the folder that you chose for your new (cloned) blog.

    Basically, by doing the above the assets will be recorded on MT for you, but you need to also copy physically the asset files (that MT provided you with the backup) to the new folder.\

    Merry Christmas!

    Enjoy,
    Mihai

  • Hi Mihai,
    I just returned to the very same problem and used your solution -- thanx a lot! Especially for taking the time on christmas eve!

    Just one addition: in my backup, image files were named *ID*-filename.jpg, so it was necessary to rename, respectively, to copy the original image files over to the directory of the cloned blog.

    Cheers,
    I hope you are doing fine,

  • Hi Funtoosh,

    You're welcome!

    I'm very glad that the advice that I provided you above was helpful.

    Didn't want to let the Christmas pas without getting back to you.

    Whenever you need anything, I will be glad to assist.

    All is good, thank you! Going to have our first kid, a little girl in about 4.5 months from now.

    Hope all is good with you, as well.

    Kind Regards,
    Mihai

  • Hey Mihai,
    wow, that is very good news, wish you all the best for the next couple months!! Don't forget to stock up on sleep now .-)

    Both my daughter (now 5 1/2) and my son (3 1/2) were born in January/February, and I have fond memories of staying at home with the little ones and enjoying the first couple of days inside, and watching the cold winter outside ...

    Cheers!

  • Hi Funtoosh,

    Thank you very much!

    You should have had an excellent time with your kids and things are getting even more challenging! :-)

    We're having an excellent time with our little one that came to this world on Feb 7th. She's lovely!

    We've been lucky that our little one sleeps quite well. She only cries when she wants to eat which is about every 2 to 3 hours.

    Be well,
    Mihai

  • Hi Mihai,
    Congratulations!! So great to hear everything is well.

    All the best,
    -f

  • Thank you!

    All the best to you!
